Circle of Life-time Box Office Domination Continues

That’s right, folks.  The #1 movie at the box office for the second week in a row was a movie that was #1 at the box office seventeen years ago. The Lion King took top honors again with $22.1 million.

.

Now, I’d say that exemplifies the sad state that our industry is in when a seventeen year old movie is topping the box office, but The Lion King is an exception.  It was only having a two week run, so that incentive got a lot more people flocking to the theaters to see it.  That, and it’s a great film.  Just missing first place by a hair was the inspiring baseball drama Moneyball starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.  Moneyball made $20.6 million in its debut.  Closely behind Moneyball, and easily the biggest shock of the weekend was A Dolphin Tale, which made $20.2 million in its premiere.  Seriously?!  Why didn’t you parents just take your kids to see The Lion King instead?  It was Morgan Freeman in the trailer that lured you in wasn’t it?  I understand now.  He’s pretty irresistible.

.

Rounding out the top five were Abduction, the thriller starring Taylor Lautner made only $11.2 million, thank f**king God, because that movie looked horrendous.  There is no reason that movie should have done better than Drive, which by the way is an amazing film, I urge you all to stop what you’re doing and go see it now!  Fifth place belonged to Contagion, which made $8.6 million.
