Review: The First Nudie Musical (1976)

Best Bad Quote:

“The stunt-cock is here.”

Sitting around your mom’s basement on a Saturday night thinking to yourself, “I could really go for a plethora of 70’s bush, some dancing dildo’s and a cameo by Ron Howard?”  Well fellow BMNer’s, you are in luck because all that I have just described is encapsulated in the 1976 cult classic, The First Nudie Musical.

The movie stars Stephen Nathan as Harry Schecter, heir to a struggling movie studio, looking for anyway to stave off bankruptcy.  Thanks to a seed planted in his head by his assistant, Rosie, played by Cindy Williams of American Graffiti fame (hence the Ron Howard cameo), Harry sells his investors on making the world’s first “Porno Musical.”

From here, the movie quickly divulges into campy, slapstick shenanigans with a buttload of nudity to keep any libido charged straight male entertained.  This satirical farce works because it never takes itself seriously… at all.  It pokes fun at the Hollywood musicals of the 40’s and 50’s, specifically the most famous musical within a musical, Singin’ in the Rain.

That being said, this movie has all the makings of a bad movie.  Production value is terrible, editing is laughable, and a majority of the acting is groan worthy, but despite all that, The First Nudie Musical still possesses quite a bit of charm.  Plus, how can you not have a special place in your heart for a movie with a musical number involving dancing dildo’s?
