Review: JAILBAIT

Best Bad Quote:

“Your breath smells like puke.”

.

The Asylum’s newest film Jailbait attempts to capitalize on the popularity of Orange is the New Black” but without any of the humor.

.

Writer/Director Jared Cohn, former guest of the BMN podcast, takes a gritty look at the juvenile penal system in this unrelenting drama. Jailbait is the Requiem for a Dream of female prison movies.

.

Jailbait tells the story Anna Nix, played veritable newcomer and girlfriend of the filmmaker Sara Malakul Lane. Anna, an aspiring cello player, is sentenced to hard time after she accidentally kills her sexually abusive stepfather during an attempted rape. Once in the juvenile corrections facility, Anna has to contend with prison gangs, a perverted warden and the temptation of hard drug use as an escape from the ugliness of her surroundings.

.

And yes, it’s as heavy as it sounds. You’re going to want to take a Silkwood shower after this one because you will feel very, very dirty. Jailbait represents an evolution for Cohn as a filmmaker as it possesses more substance and commentary then a lot of The Asylum’s previous fare. The mature subject matter of the film is only undercut by the overwrought use of punk rock songs on the soundtrack that take you out of the moment at times and possible one too many graphic sex scenes.

.

You heard me correctly. I’m complaining about too much sex in a movie. Now, don’t get me wrong, Lane is very easy on the eyes, almost too easy on the eyes and when she’s coupled with Kody, leader of the Low Riders, it’s much hotter than any prison sex scene should be. Sure, there are the Corman movies that featured buxom beauties doing what they had to do to survive in their female prisons, but in the case of Jailbait, the story of the film is so tragic, that to short shrift that with a Skinemax-esque sex scene almost feels like a cheat.

.

Lane gives a gutsy performance that shows she’s more than capable of carrying the lead role in a film. Other standouts are Steve Hanks portrayal of Warden Baragan who will make your skin crawl.

.

Jailbait is not the feel good movie of the year, but it is a courageous effort from a production company that has made it’s name on goofy action movies filled with washed up celebrities and CGI explosions. Though exhausting and draining, Jailbait tells a real, raw story that will make you never, never, ever want to end up in prison.
